Dean Calbreath

Dean Calbreath has been a reporter for The San Diego Union-Tribune for more than eight years, focusing largely on the economy and international trade. In 2005 and 2006, he was part of a Pulitzer Prize winning team that uncovered the biggest bribery scandal in U.S. history, involving then-Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, who pleaded guilty and is now serving eight years in jail.

Calbreath’s award-winning writing has included a series on China’s growing economic clout; a series exploring the rise in global oil prices; and a number of stories on the confluence between political contributions and federal defense contracts

Immediately prior to joining the Union-Tribune, Calbreath was a special correspondent covering the Czech Republic and Slovakia for The Wall Street Journal. During his 30-year career in journalism, he has covered the fall of the Berlin Wall, the restructuring of the former Soviet Union, ethnic strife in the former Yugoslavia and the emergence of the European Union.
